In August 1985, I started the research journey, and I was brought on to be a medical consultant. That will soon be 40 years in the past. In truth, I initially thought the formation of Carrington Laboratories Inc. and raising 20 million dollars to develop a new FDA-approved pharmaceutical drug from aloe leaf gel was a huge mistake.
I soon found I was exceedingly wrong. My pilot test to prove the company goal was based on a hoax or placebo and was found in error when the aloe beverage reduced or eliminated a lethal viral infection by improving symptoms of this disease by 72% in 90 days when aloe gel was consumed. This result changed my personal and professional life.
The bioactive plant-made substance in aloe was found to be acetylated mannose (Acemannan). Acemannan is a totally free-of-toxicity molecule. The FDA rejected the application to become a new drug. The FDA required an LD-50 and LD-100 for all drugs. LD stands for the lethal dose. For practical purposes, it is handy to regard Acemannan as an extension of the vitamin discovery era.
Ten academic institutions were engaged by contracts to provide answers to the FDA's requirements to advance a new drug application. Antibiotics and pharmaceutical drugs effective against all infectious agents interfere with the biochemistry of the infectious organism. Acemannan was found to elevate the innate mechanisms of human host defense. White cells engulfed and killed organisms more rapidly, and serum factors, such as antibodies and other defense molecules, were produced at levels never previously obtained.
Our research team believed we had the ultimate compound for host defense. Acemannan was believed to be an immune stimulant that worked through genes when it was found that all infectious agents were destroyed by oral ingestion. This Acemannan molecule was used in the cellular synthesis of host defensive mechanisms.
We were dumbfounded when individuals with overactive immune mechanisms, allergies, asthma, and autoimmune syndromes reported clinical benefits. This would indicate immune suppression activity.
To help cope with this dilemma, we attended a conference on the immune system's metabolic activity. It was found that steps in biochemistry activating a multiple-step cascade are present and require various nutrients for cellular synthesis to make the bioactive compounds that activate host defenses. In turn, nutrient molecules are necessary for cellular synthesis to down-regulate or reduce the activity of host defenses to suppress the host defenses and multiple immunological activities when the infection is eliminated. We had an immune modulator required when host defenses were activated to up-regulate and down-regulate gene activity. Nutrients are necessary for both cascades. Acemannan was a modulator active in cellular synthesis for the stimulant and suppressant cascade. This modulation activity is essential because it is the general mechanism for all the health benefits for cells in all organs.
In the Annual Reviews of Biochemistry 1985, a biochemistry couple reported that each microscopic cell has an assembly line in the cytoplasm that conducts cellular synthesis of bioactive compounds using nutrient molecules. An electron microscope with special processing is required to demonstrate cellular synthesis's three significant steps (ribosome, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and Golgi). The genes control the assembly of nutrient molecules. Importantly, this paper shows that nine bioactive nutrient molecules of Acemannan in three chains are assembled to make a membrane domain on all cells in all organs and systems. This domain is for cellular instructions, and harmony is a modulation function. This is not a new insight. This status is when genes are activated to move all components or substances inside a cell to homeostasis. Homeostasis is a form of cellular modulation. In this state, the cell can increase or decrease its bioactivity for organ function, as the body requires.
In time, it was realized that homeostasis did not result in deviations from normal function. For human communication, deviations from normal form profiles of symptoms and signs and are termed diseases or syndromes. That is why the NEW EDEN dietary formulation's supply of Aloe Acemannan, combined with other nutrients that are low, missing, or avoided by choice in the modern urban diet, is remarkably powerful in restoring normal health.
The impact of the dietary formulation NEW EDEN in 260 individuals over 50 years, published in the year 2000, reversed the biomarkers associated with disabilities of aging. With this addition to the diet, these individuals returned to physical and mental activities given up due to aging, 5, 10, and 15 years in the past. One of these subjects, 72 chronological years of age, chose to have his telomeres measured (Telomeres are protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that protect DNA from damage and are extended in healthy human centenarians and long-lived animals). He had consumed NEW EDEN for over 12 months. His telomeres were elongated to the biological age of 40 to 50 years. Then, immediately, a 75-year-old who had consumed formulations containing aloe Acemannan since 1985 was assayed and found to have a length of 30 to 40 years. Evidence suggests that Aloe Acemannan, combined with an exercise program, may add 20 to 25 additional years of telomere elongation. The combination is synergistic and reduces the telomere biological age by this additional increment. If it has escaped one’s cognition, at birth, an individual’s telomeres are at their maximum length and naturally get shortened with the passage of years. Acemannan reverses this natural trend.
At this point, it is significant to mention that our highest level of evidence-based science for Acemannan was conducted in Miami, Florida. An oil and gas industry family in West Texas provided clinical funds for Alzheimer's research. This pilot clinical study on Alzheimer’s Disease patients was conducted at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine with the Miami Jewish Health Service. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of dementia patients benefited from improved memory and cognition. Caregivers reported a 100% benefit, because all subjects were happy and cooperative. This was a safety study required by the Institutional Human Research Board (IRB). The CD-14 monocyte stem cells increased by nearly 400% in organ assays for bone marrow potential damage. Serum was collected at entry and exit and frozen for future study. When the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) assay became available, the dietary supplement NEW EDEN increased this factor despite dilution with the blood volume. The stem cells, present in millions in peripheral blood, were available to replace brain neurons that were dead or poorly functioning. The elevated BDNF indicated stem cell differentiation to replace brain cells that improved memory and cognition. This is not the end of anecdotal responses that occurred multiple times for this mechanism of action. Cerebral palsy youth and adults have increased brain function in neuro-muscular and brain function, in addition to similar benefits in strokes, brain trauma, and Down’s syndrome. Fragile X boys’ dementia, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome youth IQs, ADD/ADHD youth and adults, Parkinson’s disease, and other reduced brain function syndromes due to absent genes, lack of normal function, and other acquired conditions were noted. Students from grade school to college increase their academic performance if an Acemannan supplement is taken routinely.
The advertisements for dietary supplementation contain spin and overstatements. No other key ingredient in dietary supplements, such as Aloe Acemannan, has undergone independent validation and is supported by multiple published research studies from different countries. Published studies conducted in China and by Indian and Saudi Arabian researchers have published papers on the health benefits of Acemannan. The vast scope of health benefits associated with this nutrient in dietary supplementation has been extensively published.
For the sake of simplicity in understanding this disruptive nutritional technology reality, it is essential to be aware of the series of grants the National Geographic Society (NGS) has issued to locate sites of longevity and good health. Our research team has been focused for decades on understanding the science behind the NGS Blue Zones of longevity and good health. Notably, one does not have to live in or move to an isolated island of an underdeveloped, low-population peninsula. The addition of a broad dietary supplement that increases the inventory of nutrients the genes have for cellular synthesis of bioactive compounds, which governs the biochemistry of life, is available for every modern, urban individual.
Individuals seeking the long-term benefits of more comprehensive nutrition, as provided in NEW EDEN, should not expect only a short-term improvement in their nutrition. One should recognize that the fountain of youth with good health is not on some exotic mountain, island, or isolated BLUE ZONE. Such a personal goal is reflected in one’s choice of food, exercise, and lifestyle over the course of multiple years. Evidence shows that the vital nutrients in NEW EDEN are low in many modern diets and should be consumed daily over many years. The fountain of youth that provides longevity in good health is centered between one’s ears. It can be attained in any location, and dietary supplementation is an easy act in the quest to achieve longevity and good health.
